Throughout most of Asia there is a widely-held belief in karma, a concept that can be generally described as the idea that positive thoughts, words and deeds will help to bring about good experiences while negative ones will do the opposite. As such, many people who play lottery games in Asia believe that if fate or karma are on their side they may win the jackpot one day.

In April, a Thai man named Patthawikorn Boonrin claimed on the TikTok platform that he had used a ChatGPT application to generate numbers for a lottery ticket and won 2,000 baht. A month later, a Paris-based data scientist Rohith Teja bought a ticket using the app’s numbers and won 6 euros. In both cases, the winning numbers were drawn by chance and did not follow patterns in previous draws.

Nevertheless, sales of lottery tickets are on the rise across Asia and China in particular. Its economy is recovering after three years of strict pandemic-control measures shook consumer confidence. Consequently, vendors are attempting to appeal to young consumers by promoting new and trendier games as well as making them easier to buy. Lottery stands are now found inside bubble tea shops and burger restaurants. In June, China Sports Lottery’s match-betting sales jumped by 384.3% compared to the same period last year, bringing in more than 40 billion yuan. Despite this surge, millennials are still far from abandoning traditional newsstands and state-run stores for online and mobile sales.
